The Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) Hospital Services department also coordinates blood distribution to hospitals. Hospital Services staff receives daily requests for blood products from hospital blood banks in preparation for upcoming surgeries, childbirths and accidents and traumas. Some orders come in regularly while others are received in response to emergencies, like auto accidents.
In the Lexington area, volunteers deliver blood to hospitals. For hospitals in other parts of the state, however, KBC contracts with courier services to transport the blood. KBC staff are well trained in storing, packaging and transporting blood products. Courier drivers and volunteer drivers are also trained in the transport of this precious cargo.
