All donors are asked to schedule an appointment to donate blood by visiting our website or by calling 1.800.775.2522.
Registration is the first step in the donation process. All prospective donors must present a valid photo I.D. (such as a driver's license, government I.D. or student I.D.). Donors will be asked their name, birth date, address, phone, e-mail address and the last four digits of their social security number.
All prospective donors must complete a confidential health and social history questionnaire. This form
asks questions about the donor's health, travel and medication history, and social behavior. This procedure is
done in a private screening booth. The donor then receives a mini-physical. The screener takes the donor's pulse,
temperature and blood pressure. The donor's iron level is also checked with a quick finger stick. The donor must
have a specific iron level in order to donate. The screening process ensures that the donor is healthy enough
to donate and that the donor's blood is healthy enough for the patient.
If the prospective donor meets the prescribed medical requirements, he or she will be taken to a donor bed. The phlebotomist (the specially-trained technician who draws the blood) will then clean the donor's arm with an antiseptic to prepare for the donation. The needle stick is next, and it's quick and relatively painless. The donation process takes less than 12 minutes.
After donation, the donor enjoys a snack and drink and relaxes for about 10 minutes in the donor café.
And don't forget! Make another appointment for your next donation before you leave.
