Champions Committee of Kentucky Blood Center

The Champions Committee of the Kentucky Blood Center seeks to stimulate interest in KBC, to encourage participation in its health care and educational aspects, and to raise funds to assist in its development.

Our blood program belongs to and benefits each resident of our region. In this sense, KBC is the steward of a priceless community resource as it is entrusted with the collection, testing, processing, storage, and distribution of blood components donated on behalf of patients in Kentucky. None of us knows when we will suddenly need blood in a life-threatening situation. But because of KBC, our community knows there will always be blood on hand.

Kentucky Blood Center provides blood components to 67 hospitals and clinics in 59 counties in Central and Eastern Kentucky. Approximately 1,500 pints of blood are required each week to meet patient need. In 2004, we provided 78,000 blood components for transfusion, up from 43,000 in 1985.

As a trusted community resource for 39 years, KBC partners with hospitals, medical professionals, blood donors, financial contributors, media sponsors, volunteers, and patients in supplying the precious resource of blood. Regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, KBC is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks and participates as an active member of America's Blood Centers.

KBC is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization with four donor centers and approximately 200 employees. The blood center is not associated with and does not receive funding through the Red Cross or United Way and covers the cost of testing, collecting and processing blood through service fees to hospitals and other facilities that use blood to provide care. KBC depends on financial contributions as well as blood donations to achieve its mission.
