host a blood drive

You're the key!
Your time, effort and enthusiasm as a Donor Group Chairperson are as vital as the blood you'll help us collect. We rely completely on volunteer donations with 65% of the blood supply coming from group-sponsored drives like yours.

You can feel good about helping us provide nearly 300 pints of blood every day to meet the needs of our central and eastern Kentucky neighbors. Hosting and chairing a blood drive may be the most critical community service you can give.

You're in Charge!
Congratulations! You've just volunteered for a responsibility that will result in lives being saved! To help you with this vital work, KBC will assign a Donor Recruitment Specialist (DRS) to work with you to help ensure that your drive is successful. (SEE BELOW FOR A LIST OF DONOR RECRUITMENT SPECIALISTS)

Your Recruitment Specialist will help you:

Choose a date, time and site
KBC schedules six - eight mobiles blood drives every day, so adequate lead time is imperative to securing the best date for your group. Typically we want to have a firm schedule of drives three months before they take place. This allows adequate time to schedule everything needed for the drive (vehicle, staff, equipment, supplies, promotional items).

With your Donor Recruitment Specialist, choose a date, time and place that will accommodate the largest number of donors. Bear in mind that our bloodmobile requires a level 12 ft. x 50 ft. parking space. Indoor space for a portable set-up should be near an easily accessible entrance and should be near bathrooms.

Set a goal
The goal you set becomes part of the average daily supply we rely on to meet community needs. Your DRS can help you set a realistic goal and attain it.

Establish a recruitment team
If there are more than 50 people in your group, you will want to ask others to help you introduce and promote the drive . as well as recruit donors!

Recruit donors
Your DRS will provide posters, flyers and other recruitment tools and can make educational/motivational presentations. But the fact is, NOTHING succeeds like human contact.
Ideally, you (or a team member) should talk to every person in your group. One of the most common reasons people don't donate blood is that nobody asked them!

Schedule donors
We'll provide information and a sign-up sheet for scheduling donors for the drive. Sign ups show respect for the donor's time and will help minimize any wait.

Stay involved
On the day of the blood drive, provide the Team Leader of the KBC staff a copy of the donor schedule (sign-up list) and communicate throughout the day with the KBC blood collection staff.

Evaluate the drive
Ask for donors' comments. Review the results with your DRS to help improve future drives. And remember to send a blood drive evaluation survey (a brochure called "How Are We Doing?") back to KBC for our records.
