After blood has been donated, processed and tested, it is moved to the Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) Hospital Services Department, where it is housed until it is shipped to hospitals and clinics. This department works 24 hours a day, seven days a week managing and tracking the blood inventory that KBC supplies to nearly 70 Kentucky hospitals and clinics.
The KBC Hospital Services Department maintains control of the blood products until they are transfused and ensures all hospitals have the blood products needed for patients. Because all blood products have an expiration date, this department manages the inventory to prevent blood products from expiring.
