Testing Laboratory

Tubes of blood collected from the donor during the donation process are forwarded to the Kentucky Blood Center Testing Laboratory for donor screening tests, as required by industry regulatory agencies.

Donor screening tests include: blood group and type (ABO/Rh), screening for antibodies and a series of tests screening for infectious diseases. Medical Technologists in the Testing Laboratory verify that donor screening test results meet regulatory requirements before blood components are labeled by the Components Laboratory. Donor screening tests are typically completed within 24-48 hours of tubes of blood being collected from a donor.

The Testing Laboratory also completes bacterial testing for apheresis platelet products and quality control testing for blood components.
