Demand for Blood Exceeds Donations March 19, 2008

Recent Spike in Organ Transplants and Traumas Has Put a Strain on Supply

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Demand for blood in Central and Eastern Kentucky has outpaced donations this year which has kept the blood supply unusually low.

The demand has been impacted by a spike in organ transplants and trauma needs among other medical requirements. Meanwhile, donations have been slowed by weather, flu and drive cancellations.

Liver transplants are way up. Liver transplants average:

  • 12-15 red blood cells
  • 6-8 apheresis platelets
  • 6-8 jumbo plasma (pheresis) or 18 to 24 little plasmas.

That amounts to about 24 to 31 donors per liver transplant.

Anyone in general good health, 17 years or age or older and weighing at least 110 pounds may donate. All donors must show a photo I.D.

The Kentucky Blood Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring a safe, adequate blood supply for 67 Kentucky hospitals and clinics thanks to generous blood donors in 62 Kentucky counties.
