Healthy Habits: Free Cholesterol Test at KBC Dec. 27, 2007

Blood Donation Part of Healthy Lifestyle

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A recent survey of blood donors by the Kentucky Blood Center showed that 98% of donors are most motivated to give because they want to save someone’s life. For the next month, donors can possibly save another life: their own.

Everyone who gives blood to the Kentucky Blood Center between Dec. 27 and Jan. 31, will be provided a free, total cholesterol screening courtesy of UK HealthCare.

Total cholesterol is one of several markers used to evaluate cardiovascular health. This screening is not affected by recent diet since it does not fluctuate rapidly with meals; therefore donors do not have to be fasting to participate in this screening.

“This is the time of year when many people resolve to take better care of themselves; becoming a blood donor is clearly a way to feel great about yourself and pay attention to your own wellbeing,” said Jim Tinker, Kentucky Blood Center spokesperson.

Every time a person donates blood, he or she is always given a free anemia test in addition to a pulse and blood pressure check. Research has also indicated that donating blood may reduce the risk of heart disease for men.

Blood center officials believe the cholesterol test will prove to be a timely incentive for individuals recovering from holiday indulgences and focusing now on healthy habits. More than 60 percent of current blood donors who responded to a recent survey said a free cholesterol test would be an added incentive to donate, Tinker said.

“Of course, it is nice too that you lose a pound every time you donate blood,” Tinker added.

Those wanting to donate blood can call 1-800-775-2522 or visit kybloodcenter.org for blood drive and donor center details. The Kentucky Blood Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring a safe, adequate blood supply for 67 Kentucky hospitals and clinics thanks to generous blood donors in 62 counties.
