Weather Wallops Blood Supply Jan. 26, 2009

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Blood Center is issuing an EMERGENCY APPEAL for blood donors due to a swift decline in donations and a winter storm warning projected to cripple the blood supply.

Weather has already forced the cancellation of multiple blood drives in the past 10 days, causing 350 pints of blood to go uncollected. Transfusions have outpaced blood donations by more than 250 pints in the past 72 hours at hospitals served by KBC.

“Blood drives may be closed due to weather, but all KBC donor centers will be open,” said Bill Reed, KBC president and CEO. “We are asking the community to make blood donation a priority this week.”

The Kentucky Blood Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring a safe, adequate blood supply for patients at nearly 70 Kentucky hospitals and clinics in more than 60 counties
