Firefighters and Police Give Back with Blood
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Police reported to the Kentucky Blood Center this week. Firefighters were on the scene as well.
Fortunately, there was no crisis. Instead, firefighters and law enforcement personnel of Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government are turning out to donate blood as part of their annual Give Back program. The program came about as a result of the public outpouring of affection for police and firefighters following the 9/11 tragedies.
The blood drive, Sept. 8-15, is among activities safety professionals have undertaken to show support for communities they serve and protect.
The week also is a friendly rivalry between police and firefighters to see who can give the most blood. Additionally, they have challenged the public to turn out and donate blood as well and “vote” for the police or the firefighters when they do.
The public is encouraged to give Tuesday Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lexington Fire Dept. Training Center, 1375 Old Frankfort Pike. Supporters can also give blood at the Lexington Donor Center, 3121 Beaumont Center Circle, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
The Kentucky Blood Center is a non-profit organization ensuring a safe, adequate blood supply for 67 Kentucky hospitals and clinics through generous blood donors in 62 counties.
