Florida Tops Kentucky in 2026 Big Blue Slam Jan. 30, 2026

Dedicated Kentucky Blood Center Donors Rally After Winter Storm to Help Blood Supply

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A winter weather storm that paralyzed much of the state and a formidable opponent in Florida ended Kentucky’s four-year winning streak in the 2026 Big Blue Slam. LifeSouth Community Blood Center in Florida defeated Kentucky Blood Center 1,123-792 in the 18th annual blood battle to boost the winter blood supply.

KBC enjoyed the best turnout of the five-day competition for either side on Friday with 253 donors, besting Florida’s 241, but the early week hole the winter storm put Kentucky in was ultimately too much to overcome.

Underscoring the passion of Kentucky donors, KBC’s lost its first blood battle since the 2021 Big Blue Crush competition vs. Tennessee.

“Even in defeat, we are reminded of the dedication of our donors,” said Mandy Brajuha, VP of external relations. “Despite the difficult conditions, our loyal donors found a way to get to donation locations to help the blood supply. Thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves. We understand many donors couldn’t come out as they normally would because of the weather, but you can still help. Given the losses we suffered this week, we’ll need you in the coming days to put blood back on the shelves for local hospitals.”

The goal of Big Blue Slam for KBC is to create a robust supply of blood for the 70-plus local hospitals it provides blood to for the second half of winter, but KBC ends the week in low supply of O- and A- types. Donors can schedule an appointment at any one of KBC’s eight donor centers or daily mobile blood drives by visiting kybloodcenter.org or by calling 800.775.2522.

Donations at KBC benefit local patients in need of blood products for a wide range of treatments and needs, including traumas, cancers, diseases, surgeries, organ transplants and more. KBC is the exclusive blood provider for UK HealthCare, Baptist Health, CHI Saint Joseph, Appalachian Regional Healthcare and more.
