Blood Shortage Persists
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The blistering heat wave slowed response to the emergency appeal for blood donors issued in Central and Eastern Kentucky last week. Officials at the Kentucky Blood Center report that the blood deficit remains a serious threat; without a tremendous increase in blood donors, 67 hospitals will be looking at a deficit of 1,000 units of blood by month’s end.
“We need more blood donors right now. We are in a blood shortage emergency,” said Jim Tinker, Kentucky Blood Center spokesperson. “We need hundreds of blood donors every day and more right now to make up this deficit. We need a thousand additional donors this month.”
The Kentucky Blood Center reports inventory is well below normal levels.
Those wanting to donate blood can call 1-800-775-2522 or visit kybloodcenter.org to schedule an appointment to give blood. Walk-in donors also are encouraged.
The Kentucky Blood Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring a safe, adequate blood supply for 67 hospitals and clinics thanks to generous blood donors in 62 counties.
